Where We Began

2016: The Vision

The African Australian Psychiatrist Association was founded in October 2016 in Cairns. Associate Professor Wole Akosile and Dr Fortunate Mchechesi shared a vision over dinner: to create a platform for African psychiatrists and patients.

Recognising the Need

African psychiatrists were underrepresented in Australia, and cultural competence in mental health care was limited. The founders aimed to mentor professionals, enhance African cultural representation, and provide a supportive network.

Growing Impact

Since its inception, AAPA has become a vital organisation promoting mental health awareness, cultural inclusivity, and professional development for psychiatrists and the broader community.
